File an EIN

File for an EIN

The Employment Identification Number or EIN (sometimes referred to as the Federal Employment Identification Number or FEIN) is a unique nine digit number from the IRS to identify a business operating in the U.S.  Much like what a social security number is to a person, the EIN is essentially a social security number for a business.  While most businesses will need to get an EIN, some do not need to.  Businesses required to get an EIN include:

  • Partnerships, corporations or LLCs
  • Sole proprietorships with employees
Legally, if you are a sole proprietorship with no employees, you aren't required to get an EIN and would simply use your social security number.  In actuality however, many banks, utility companies and some vendors may tell you that the EIN is required.  Some are misinformed about this and others make it a requirement, so you may need to get one regardless. Also in the event you don't want to use your social security number, you can get an EIN.

The EIN is free to get and can be obtained from the IRS.  The number only needs to be applied for once, there is no cost to get it and only takes a few minutes to complete the application.  You will get your number within a few minutes too, so you can move on to the next step.
